For many businesses expanding into Europe, the first question is: “How do I ship a small quantity to Europe without taking on unnecessary cost?” The answer is often groupage. This article explains what groupage is and how the door-to-door process works, simply.

What Is Groupage?

Groupage (LTL) combines shipments that do not fill an entire vehicle with other loads on the same line. So instead of renting a full truck, you ship for only the space your cargo occupies. It is the preferred method for regular but low-volume shipments.

The Door-to-Door Process, Step by Step

  1. Quote and planning: The route is planned by cargo type, volume/weight and destination.
  2. Pickup: Cargo collected from the sender's address is combined with other shipments on the same line.
  3. Transport document: The standard CMR document for international road carriage is issued.
  4. Border crossing and transit: The shipment moves toward the destination over planned corridors.
  5. Delivery to the door: Cargo is delivered to the recipient's address in the destination country.

Which Cargo Suits Groupage?

Palletizable, standard-packaged cargo that does not require a full truck suits groupage. Reefer vehicles are considered for temperature-sensitive goods, and ADR transport for eligible dangerous-goods groups.

Shipping to Central and Western Europe

Industry- and trade-heavy markets such as Germany, Austria, Hungary and the Netherlands are served by regular groupage lines. Sturdy packaging, clear labeling and complete paperwork speed up the process. Since customs steps vary by product and country, clarifying responsibilities before shipping is important.
